Key features you must check before buying any critical illness plan in USA.
Review the exact list of covered illnesses — comprehensive plans include cancer, heart attack, stroke, and organ failure, not just a limited set of 3-4 conditions.
Some policies pay out only once per lifetime. Look for a recurrence benefit that allows a second payout if the same illness returns after a set period.
Most policies have a waiting period, typically around 30 days, before coverage kicks in — a diagnosis within this window is not payable.
Choose a lump-sum amount that can realistically cover your health plan's deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, not just a token amount.
Employer-sponsored critical illness plans are often cheaper but may not be portable if you change jobs — compare against individual market plans.
Read the fine print on pre-existing condition clauses carefully, as many policies exclude or limit payouts for conditions diagnosed before the policy start date.

Common covered conditions include cancer, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and major organ transplant, though specific coverage varies by policy.
Health insurance covers actual medical treatment costs, while critical illness insurance provides a fixed cash payout upon diagnosis, which can be used for any purpose.
No, critical illness insurance pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a specific illness, while disability insurance replaces a portion of lost income during an inability to work.
The payout is typically unrestricted and can cover medical bills, lost income, travel for treatment, childcare, or everyday living expenses.
Yes, most policies include a waiting period, often around 30 days, before coverage becomes effective for newly diagnosed conditions.
Yes, many employers offer critical illness insurance as a voluntary benefit, though individual policies are also available directly from insurers.
Coverage for pre-existing conditions is often limited or excluded, so it is important to review the policy's specific terms before purchasing.
