What is RSI?
RSI (Relative Strength Index) is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and magnitude of recent price changes. It was developed by J. Welles Wilder in 1978 and is now one of the most widely used indicators in trading β visible on every Zerodha Kite and TradingView chart.
RSI moves on a scale of 0 to 100. When it is very high, the stock has risen too fast and may be due for a pullback (overbought). When it is very low, the stock has fallen too fast and may be due for a bounce (oversold). This makes RSI incredibly useful for timing entries and exits.
Reading the RSI Scale
Above 70Overbought Zone
The stock has rallied too fast. Momentum may be exhausted. Not a sell signal by itself β in a strong bull run, RSI can stay above 70 for weeks. But it is a warning to be cautious.
50β70Bullish Zone
RSI above 50 confirms upward momentum. The trend is up. Many traders only buy when RSI is in this zone β confirming they are trading with the trend.
30β50Bearish Zone
RSI below 50 confirms downward momentum. The trend is down. Selling or staying in cash is generally safer in this zone.
Below 30Oversold Zone
The stock has fallen too fast. May be due for a bounce. A great zone to watch for reversal signals β but never buy just because RSI is low. Wait for a candle pattern confirmation.
Which RSI Period Should You Use?
RSI 14
Recommended for beginners
Default setting. Best for daily charts and swing trading. Used by most professional traders.
RSI 9
Intraday traders
Faster, more sensitive. Generates more signals β and more false signals. Used for intraday trading on Nifty F&O.
RSI 21
Positional & long-term traders
Slower, more reliable. Fewer false signals. Useful for weekly charts and positional trades.
RSI Divergence β The Hidden Signal
Divergence is when price and RSI move in opposite directions. This is one of the most powerful β and most misunderstood β signals in technical analysis.
π
Bullish Divergence
Price makes a lower low, but RSI makes a higher low. Sellers are losing strength even though price is falling. Signals a potential trend reversal upward.
Price: Lower Low | RSI: Higher Low β Potential Bounce
π
Bearish Divergence
Price makes a higher high, but RSI makes a lower high. Buyers are losing strength even though price is rising. Signals a potential trend reversal downward.
Price: Higher High | RSI: Lower High β Potential Reversal
How Indian Traders Use RSI in Real Trading
1
Trend Confirmation
Check if RSI is above or below 50. Above 50 = bull trend, look for buys. Below 50 = bear trend, avoid longs or look for shorts on Nifty.
2
Oversold Bounces on Quality Stocks
When a fundamentally strong stock like HDFC Bank dips and RSI hits 30, experienced traders watch for a reversal candle to buy the dip.
3
Exit Signal in Strong Rallies
When RSI hits 75β80 on a stock that has rallied hard, traders start booking profits or tighten stop losses β even if they do not fully exit.
4
Divergence for Early Reversals
Spotting bullish divergence on Nifty's daily chart before a major rally is one of the most powerful uses of RSI for positional traders.
Power Combo: RSI + Moving Average
Buy setup:Price above 50 EMA (uptrend confirmed) + RSI pulls back to 40β50 zone (momentum reset) + bullish candle = high probability entry
Avoid:Buying just because RSI is below 30 when price is also below the 200 SMA β that is catching a falling knife in a bear market
RSI Can Stay Overbought/Oversold for a Long Time
In a strong bull run (like Nifty in 2023β2024), RSI can stay above 70 for weeks without any meaningful correction. Never short a stock just because RSI is 75. Always wait for confirmation β a break below a key support or a bearish candlestick pattern.
Key Takeaways
- RSI oscillates between 0 and 100 β above 70 is overbought, below 30 is oversold
- RSI above 50 = bullish momentum; below 50 = bearish momentum
- Default setting is RSI 14 β best for beginners on daily charts
- Bullish divergence (price lower low, RSI higher low) signals a potential reversal up
- Always combine RSI with price action and trend direction β never use it in isolation
