What is a Debit Card?
A debit card is a payment card that deducts money directly from your consumer checking account to pay for a purchase. Unlike credit cards, debit cards do not allow you to go into debt, except perhaps for small negative balances if you have overdraft protection.
Types of Debit Cards in India
- **Classic/Silver Cards:** Basic cards with lower withdrawal limits, suitable for everyday use.
- **Gold/Platinum Cards:** Offer higher withdrawal limits, insurance coverage, and sometimes cashback rewards.
- **Signature/Infinite Cards:** Premium cards with high limits, airport lounge access, and exclusive lifestyle benefits.
- **RuPay Cards:** Domestic card network by NPCI, often issued with government schemes (PMJDY) and increasingly accepted internationally.
How to Choose the Best Debit Card
- **1. ATM Withdrawal Limit:** Check the daily cash withdrawal limit. If you transact frequently in cash, look for a card with a high limit (₹50k+).
- **2. Annual Fees:** Many basic cards are free, but premium cards charge ₹500-₹1000 annually. Ensure the benefits (like lounge access) outweigh the fee.
- **3. Rewards & Cashback:** Some modern debit cards offer reward points on shopping or cashback on fuel. Check the reward rate.
- **4. International Usage:** If you travel abroad, ensure the card is enabled for international transactions and check the forex markup fee.
