Key features you must check before buying any life insurance plan in India.
Choose a cover of at least 10-15x your annual income. Underinsurance is the most common mistake — a small sum assured defeats the purpose of protection.
Always disclose pre-existing health conditions, smoking habits, and family medical history honestly — non-disclosure is the top reason claims get rejected.
Prefer insurers with a claim settlement ratio above 97-98%, available in the IRDAI annual report, as it reflects reliability during claims.
For pure protection at the lowest cost, a term plan beats endowment or ULIP plans — keep insurance and investment separate for better returns.
Add riders like accidental death benefit, critical illness, or waiver of premium to strengthen your base policy at a small extra cost.
Premiums are locked in based on your age at purchase — buying in your 20s or early 30s secures significantly lower lifetime premiums.
Life insurance is a contract where the insurer pays a sum of money to your nominee upon your death, or in some plans, a maturity benefit if you survive the policy term.
Common types include term insurance, endowment plans, ULIPs (unit-linked insurance plans), whole life plans, and money-back policies.
A ULIP (Unit Linked Insurance Plan) combines life insurance with investment, where part of the premium goes towards insurance cover and part is invested in market-linked funds.
Endowment plans offer both a death benefit and a maturity benefit if you survive the term, while term insurance offers only a death benefit at lower premiums.
Yes, premiums qualify for deduction under Section 80C, up to Rs 1.5 lakh per financial year, subject to policy conditions.
Maturity proceeds are generally exempt under Section 10(10D), provided the premium does not exceed 10% of the sum assured for policies issued after specified dates.
Most policies offer a grace period, typically 15-30 days, after which the policy may lapse, though some plans offer a revival period to reinstate coverage.
Yes, you can hold multiple life insurance policies from different insurers, as long as you disclose existing coverage while applying for new ones.
